Swansboro NC
Swansboro is rich in history with the first permanent settlement in 1730 at the mouth of White Oak River at the former site of the Algonquin Indian village. In 1783 Swansboro was incorporated and named in honor of Samuel Swann, a speaker of the House of Commons. The town thrived and ship building became the leading industry. The famous shipbuilder and commander of the privateer ship,Snap Dragon, Captain Otway Burns lived and worked in Swansboro. He built North Carolina's first steamboat. The port prospered until the end of the Civil war. The decline of the shipping industry caused the people of Swansboro to look in another direction for a way to make a living. A natural resource in abundant supply was the answer- the water-and from there the commercial fishing industry of Swansboro began and is still strong today. During World War II, the Marine Corps bases of Camp LeJeune and Cherry Point contributed to economic growth bringing people into the area seeking homes in Onslow County. This growth has remained strong but Swansboro has done a magnificant job of retaining its quaint charm and picturesque small town character while promoting and developing a successful fishing and tourist business.
Soccer is big in this small town--Swansboro high school girls & boys teams are reigning state champions. Over 500 children partiipate in the Swansboro soccer league. The community and league are asking for new facilities to accomodate the exiting needs. Construction of 5 new fields is in the works. Real estate is a precious commodity in this waterfront town but the residents understand the need for the new fields and support the construction. This is a growing area and many new homes have been built and more are under construction. Located near Camp LeJeune and Jacksonville, the need for new housing is ever growing. Swansboro homes prices and real estate in Swansboro continue to hold its own during what the media has called the "housing slow down".
