Like buying a used car, there are risks in buying a home.. Unfortunately, there are no test drives available. Most people do hire a professional home inspector and that is wise but there are things which the Onslow County real estate buyer should look for himself.
The buyer should try to put aside all personal preferences and look at the home with a critical eye. Some things to look for are
- uneven floors,
- sticking/dragging doors
- signs of leaks
- lack of maintenance
- Have ceilings been recently repaired? That could indicate a leak
- Check out the electrical outlets in older homes--updated and new homes have 3 prong holes while older ones have two holes and may not support the Onslow County real estate buyers' newer appliances, etc.
- How about the plumbing? Turn on several faucets at once--do you loose a lot of water pressure? How do the sink, showers and tubs drain?
- Another important thing to look for is where the house is located. Drainage problems are expensive to solve. If it is located at the bottom of a hill, has drainage been installed?
- Try to analyze if anything about the house seems out of character, if so this could indicate the seller has just made repairs and coverups.
