Jacksonville, NC (Onslow County)
In 1705 three English men arrived in Town Port on the New River in Onslow County. There they remained for 6 years before they were joined by John Nasague, a Frenchman, who settled on the Northwest branch of New River. During the next 18 years 35 more families settled in and around the area. 1731 is the date history recognizes as the establishment date of Onslow County. Governor George Burrington and his council granted the request for settlement on December 4, 1731.
The Assembly protested so Onslow delegates were not seated until the Assembly passed a special act on March 2, 1735 which "confirmed and established" the precincts of Onslow. In 1741 the Assembly authorized that the county seat be established at Old Town Point "to be known as Johnston" in honor of Governor Gabriel Johnston. There it remained until 1752 when a hurricane decimated it. Many records were lost. The county seat was then moved to Wantland's Ferry as it was then know, which is the same location as the present. In 1842, the name was changed to Jacksonville in honor of Andrew Jackson.
