SWANSBORO — The Swansboro High School gymnasium wasn’t large enough to contain the love the school and the community have for its longtime principal.

A crowd of about 1,500 people turned out Sunday to pay homage to Joe Beasley, who died Thursday at the age of 63 from bleeding of the brain stem after he collapsed last week during a Board of Education meeting. The gymnasium was filled to capacity so about 200 people watched from the auditorium.

Throughout town, businesses such as Dairy Queen, Hardee’s and Waters Ace Hardware posted messages on their marquees in honor of the man who led the high school for nearly three decades.

During the roughly 90-minute funeral service, former colleagues and family members praised Beasley for his devotion and kindness to all whose lives he touched.

“He made all the difference in the school system, the community and in the lives of countless students,” said former Onslow County Schools superintendent Ron Singletary. “He always made decisions with his heart as well as his head.”
